UAE company eyes Aviogenex takeover

Emirati company submits Aviogenex offer

A Dubai-based company has sent in an offer for the purchase of Serbian charter airline Aviogenex. The offer comes after the government put up 502 state-owned companies for sale a month ago, among which is Aviogenex. Prior to the break-up of Yugoslavia, Aviogenex was the busiest charter airline in the country, handling over half a million passengers per year in the late 1980s. However, the carrier has fallen on hard times with a single and aging Boeing 737-200 jet grounded at Belgrade Airport and a handful of employees. The deadline for the submission of bids has been set for September 15, after which talks with interested parties will begin. The offer is the most serious chance yet for Aviogenex’s revival.

A recent statement issued by Avigenex employees said, “Aviogenex practically does not exist. It is neither here nor there. Our hands are tied. We haven’t been paid in over a year”. Aviogenex last operated flights during the winter on behalf of Westair Benin to which it leased its aircraft, pilots, crew and maintenance staff. Its 27-year old B737-200 returned to Belgrade earlier this year and has been grounded ever since. In previous years, the airline operated on behalf of Jat Airways during the peak summer season, as the Serbian national carrier faced a chronic fleet shortage.

In early 2013, prior to Jat Airways’ sale to Etihad Airways and subsequent relaunch as Air Serbia, the Serbian government revealed plans for a possible joint venture between the two airlines where Aviogenex would receive Jat’s aging Boeings and set up low cost flights. In a statement, the Ministry of Transport said at the time that the low cost airline, which would operate as a subsidy of Jat, would have the task to compete against other no frill airlines and connect Serbia’s alternative airports such as Niš. The low cost airline, operated on behalf of Aviogenex, was to start operations once Jat’s fleet renewal process was complete. Incidentally, Air Serbia is set to complete its fleet renewal process this month with the arrival of its tenth Airbus aircraft. The fate of the remaining four Boeing 737-300s, currently utilised by Air Serbia is unknown. Aviogenex was set up in 1968. In 1990, its busiest year, it handled 633.932 passengers with a fleet of ten aircraft. The airline currently employs seven pilots, seventeen crew members, twelve ground engineers and four flight dispatchers.

What on earth would they do with Aviogenex?! Could they be after their AOC?

  2. Anonymous09:41

Yes, also very interested to know why they would want Aviogenex. But if its a UAE company that means they can't just come to Serbia and register an airline (like a company from the EU could do) so they probably want the AOC). Would be interesting if they created some low cost airline and how it would affect JU but this is probably all in agreement with them. Anyhow, very interesting time for Serbian aviation.

OT: Anyone has a clue on why EasyJet will pull out from both BEG-FCO and BEG-MXP routes. Do they anticipate unbeatable competition from Alitalia and Air Serbia who are now both in Etihad's alliance? Or is it because Alitalia already beat them and Air Serbia on the FCO route? And what was wrong with MXP flights anyway?

Air Serbia was also crushed in Rome. They have/had around 50 passenger per flight. They are also reducing their flights from 14 to 7 weekly rotations.

Good thing they can save on airport costs by having them completely written off then.

I think now that AZ and JU will be defacto partners in the Etihad Alliance, I expect to see more happening on flights between Italy and Serbia. I expect both AZ and JU expanding in co-operation, and both expanding on flights between respective bases. Both have something to offer. U2 is clearly the weaker third. Theyll need to bring in something new. Id like them start MAN-BEG and NCE-BEG.

Great news for Aviogenex! Its a shame that this didnt occur a few years ago, so that AGX does what Wizz is doing for the last couple of years.
Aviogenex is a legendary charter carrier that has got a bright future on EXYU LCC sky. Its got a highest "regional" potential as it is known to many.

Wizz hasnt done much in Belgrade, While Jat was what it was they had massive opportunities and didnt do much other than copy Jat routes. Wizz is not something that AGX should look to.

    2. Anonymous23:17

What I meant was the rapid expansion of one small LCC in the Balkans. They got a nice share of pax in this part f Europe. IMO AGX could play that "regional" and neutral role that is still a big issue in EXYU.
I would love to see them linking Ohrid, Pristina, Zagreb, Spain with BEG/INI...

I guess it's not highlighted by the language you speak either. Or the flag either. Or the name of the carrier either. It could have as well boasted the Marshall Island's flag, use Tagalog language and Arabic alphabet, all while Kondic Christening his offices with an Orthodox pope...and it'll still be Serbian!

I don't mind losing those German routes like Cologne, Stuttgart etc. Those can be compensated with Niš in the future. But, those low-cost lines to Italy are really important since many ppl from Bosnia use it as well. Still I cannot understand why did they cancel the route in March but not in October..
